When Harley opened her eyes the next morning, a smile slowly crept across her face. She stretched lazily in bed and the smile only grew bigger. She threw aside the sheets and practically leaped out of bed.

She snapped up the case files and kept them under her arm until she got to the coffee pot, where she set them down on the table. She started humming Happy by Pharrell Williams as she added a packet of coffee into the machine. She flipped the switch and welcomed the scent of percolating coffee into the room. Her whole body was humming with newfound energy.

While she waited for her cup of coffee, she opened the files and flipped through the photos to see if something clicked. After a few minutes, she closed the file and poured herself a cup of coffee. Her mind drifted to Rayland while she added cream and sugar to her cup. She stirred the coffee lazily as she smiled. She continued to mouth the words to the song as she remembered the kiss that they shared. Her face suddenly burned as she thought about his mouth on hers.

Rayland’s kiss had certainly awakened something inside of her. A feeling of hope, perhaps, that everything was going to be okay. That she could move on with her life and be happy with a man. In the same way that she had once envisioned being happy with Chris. Was it possible? That was what that kiss had brought her, a feeling of hope. It was rare to find a man that you had instant chemistry with and forgetting that kiss would be impossible. She wondered when she would be able to see him again. She now had responsibilities, and just gallivanting on the beach with a new man was not her first priority any longer.

As she was lost in her thoughts, her phone buzzed and she looked around to see where it was. She saw it still on the nightstand. She picked it up to see a text message from the Ned. Oh, aren’t we just cozy now.

She clicked on the message.

Ned: Everyone’s impressed with you, Harley. You did well. Remember to keep things on the down low, though. The chief still has a perma-scowl. Talk soon.
